Our Definition of Missions

What do we mean when we use the word missions in our church?  This is a crucial question for each church to answer.  For some, missions is only cross-cultural or non-local ministry.  Others say that any evangelism or outreach of the church is missions.  Here is a sound, generic definition: Missions is the worldwide enterprise of making disciples of the nations that falls outside the normal outreach responsibilities of the local church.
These key elements must shape your definition of missions:
It must be true to Scripture.
It must clearly define the task of missions.
It must distinctly address the particular concerns of your missions team.

What is our definition of missions?

Consider these possibilities:

  • The cross-cultural ministry of our church
  •
  • Any ministry not taking place at our facilities
  •
  • Overseas ministry only
  •
  • Overseas ministry or ministry to a subculture within our own country
  •
  • Evangelization and ministry to non-Christians and/or nominal Christians
  •
  • Evangelizing, discipling, planting churches, and aiding in growth and development both overseas and in various U.S. subcultures
  •
  • Any endeavor outside our local congregation to fulfill the Great Commission of Christ by proclaiming the gospel of Christ, making disciples and relating to the whole need of mankind-spiritual and physical
  •
